When you are getting older, there are many changes on your body. You may start to have wrinkles or may gain weight, and all of your muscles are not as strong as before. There are more from what I mentioned, but actually the most change than really disturb us about again is our mind will start to work slowly. People used to think this is part of the process of getting old, but today we know that is not the reason we are going to accept the concept of mental decline. There are many things you can do to keep yourself up shape and young.
Eat more healthily is one of the most important thing you can do to keep your mind and body in a good shape. I don’t think all of you know about this fact, but free radicals actually can damage our brain cells. That’s why having a good diet like fruits and vegetables are better for our body because all these food have high antioxidants in it that can fight against free radials. When we eat fruits that contain high antioxidant, it can actually help our body in many ways such as increasing blood flow to the brain. By doing so it can help our body to make more acetylcholine, it is an important neurotransmitter that aids in mental function.
Many studies showed that stress could be the major reason for mental decline, and it also showed that people who get stress easily would have a high risk of cognitive impairment. One thing you need to learn is how to keep yourself in good mood all times and how to handle stress because if you don’t do it now, it will be really hard to manage when you get older. Regular exercise and deliberation are also a good way to relieve stress. Actually deliberation helps us to improve our memory and attention span.
Sleep is really important for our brain to have good function. Our brain is working on storing and sorting the information we gather for the day when we are sleeping. If you didn’t have enough sleep, you will not remember things in one piece. Your mood will be changing all the times, and you won’t perform your best for that day.
The reason why older people always suffer from mental decline is because they are not busy like when they were young. Brain needs exercise to keep up the memory and healthy just like we need to exercise to keep our body healthy. It is really important to be active when you become older. You can do volunteer work and get involved more in the community and find something you enjoy to do, and it will keep your brain active all times.
Last but not least, you may want to keep up your exercise schedule. Exercise are not only increase blood flow to the brain, it can also keep our body moving so we can get more interaction with the outside world. If you like to take a walk outside of your house, just walk to the garden and smell some flowers and make sure all your senses will give your brain a big workout.
